An educational overview of where Poquoson drinking water comes from, how it’s treated, and where to find the official annual water quality report.
Where Poquoson Water Comes From
Poquoson’s drinking water is supplied by Newport News Waterworks, a regional water provider serving Poquoson and several neighboring communities on the Virginia Peninsula.
The primary source of drinking water for this system is surface water from the Diascund Creek Reservoir, supplemented by the Chickahominy River as needed. Water is pumped from these sources to regional reservoirs for storage before treatment and distribution.
How Poquoson Water Is Treated
Water supplied to Poquoson is treated by Newport News Waterworks using a multi-step treatment process at its regional treatment plants.
Treatment includes coagulation, ozone disinfection, filtration, pH adjustment, corrosion control, and chloramines for secondary disinfection. These steps help remove particles and microorganisms and maintain water quality throughout the distribution system.
Official Poquoson Water Quality Report

Additional Water Information (EWG Database)
Some homeowners also explore third-party water databases such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Tap Water Database. This resource compiles publicly available testing data and presents it using its own health-based guidelines.
EWG is not a regulatory agency, and its screening levels may differ from EPA or state drinking water standards. For official compliance reporting, always refer to the annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) linked above.
