More than 650,000 Valley Springs water units sold in Illinois and Wisconsin are under recall after federal officials said the products were bottled under “insanitary conditions.” The recall began on February 6, 2026, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration later listed it as a Class II recall on February 26, 2026.
What happened?
Valley Springs Artesian Gold, LLC, a Wisconsin-based bottled water company, recalled six Valley Springs-branded products after the FDA’s enforcement report cited “Water was bottled under insanitary conditions” as the reason. Reports list the total as 651,148 units.
Which products are included?
All recalled items were sold under the Valley Springs brand and distributed only in Illinois and Wisconsin.
The recalled products include:
1-gallon Valley Springs 100% Natural Bottled Water — UPC 0 31193-00701 9
2.5-gallon Valley Springs 100% Natural Bottled Water — UPC 0 31193-01501 4

What does a Class II recall mean?
The FDA describes a Class II recall as “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
The FDA listed the recall as Class II on February 26, 2026, after it was initiated on February 6, 2026.
Why this matters for families and everyday use
Bottled water is often treated like a safe default. People use it for drinking, cooking, and mixing infant formula. When a recall cites “insanitary conditions,” it raises a basic question: whether the packaging or handling could have introduced contamination during bottling. The FDA’s Class II label signals a health risk that is usually temporary or reversible, but still serious enough to pull products from sale.
How reverse osmosis systems and whole-home water conditioners relate
A Valley Springs water recall puts attention back on control and consistency. Reverse osmosis (RO) systems can reduce many dissolved contaminants at the tap, which helps households rely less on packaged water. Whole-home water conditioners can also improve water feel and reduce scaling in plumbing and appliances, making daily water use more predictable. Together, they support safer, steadier water for drinking, cooking, and sensitive uses when bottled products come into question.
