Smithfield's municipal drinking water comes from two deep groundwater wells in the Middle Potomac Aquifer. Since 2011, the town's reverse osmosis plant has treated that groundwater to reduce naturally occurring fluoride before the water enters the distribution system.
What Smithfield's Latest Water Report Says
Smithfield's 2025 Consumer Confidence Report states that the town's drinking water met or exceeded all federal and state regulatory standards during the year. The report also gives homeowners useful context about treatment, disinfectant residuals, disinfection byproducts, fluoride, lead and copper.

The town reported no violations in the regulated-contaminant table and stated that its drinking water met or exceeded federal and state standards.
Fluoride Treatment
The municipal RO plant is used to reduce naturally occurring fluoride. The 2025 report lists finished-water fluoride at 1.19 ppm, with a reported range of 0.99–1.34 ppm.
Disinfection Byproducts
The report lists total trihalomethanes at 11 ppb and HAA5 at 1 ppb, both below their federal maximum contaminant levels.
Lead & Copper
Lead and copper results in the report are from 2023 monitoring. The town also notes that household plumbing materials can affect water after it reaches a property.
EPA standards and EWG health guidelines are different benchmarks.
EWG currently lists 14 contaminants detected for the Town of Smithfield utility, with eight above EWG's health-based guidelines. Those EWG guidelines are not the same as federal or Virginia drinking-water limits, and the town's 2025 report states that its water met applicable regulatory standards.

Well Water Requires Property-Specific Testing
