FDA Finds Contaminates In Popular Water Bottle Brands

The FDA has identified the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in ten bottled water brands sold across the U.S., raising concerns about the perceived safety of a product many Americans turn to for peace of mind. Though the detected PFAS levels remained below federal safety thresholds, their mere presence has stirred renewed dialogue on public health and regulatory oversight.

What the Tests Showed

Between 2023 and 2024, the FDA collected and tested 197 bottled water samples from retail stores nationwide. The sample pool included purified, spring, mineral, and artesian waters. Among these, ten samples showed detectable PFAS levels. Eight of the contaminated samples came from U.S.-based purified or spring water brands. The remaining two samples originated from imported artesian water.

Each contaminated sample contained between one and four PFAS compounds. The FDA screened for 18 different PFAS chemicals. Six of these fall under the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) maximum contamination level standards for public drinking water. Of the PFAS detected, four were below those regulatory thresholds, and two do not yet have established limits.

This shift contrasts sharply with earlier FDA data from 2016 and findings from the Total Diet Study, where PFAS went undetected in bottled water.

Why PFAS Matter

PFAS chemicals are nicknamed “forever chemicals” for a reason. These compounds resist breakdown in the environment and in the human body. Once ingested, they accumulate over time. Scientific studies have connected PFAS exposure with a host of health concerns. These include increased risks of certain cancers, weakened immune responses, and developmental delays in children.

Contamination typically occurs through drinking water, food, or exposure to everyday items made with PFAS. For households that rely on bottled water to avoid municipal sources, this discovery prompts a difficult question: where can one find genuinely clean water?

PFAS contamination does not impact all communities equally. Industrial sites that produce or use PFAS often discharge waste into local water systems, affecting nearby residents. These communities, often lower-income and lacking political influence, face disproportionate exposure risks. This reality has turned PFAS from a scientific issue into a matter of environmental justice.

What Agencies Are Doing

The FDA has committed to ongoing surveillance of bottled water and food for PFAS contamination. Officials aim to track how much PFAS consumers are ingesting through food and drink.

When the EPA sets new maximum PFAS levels for public drinking water, the FDA must follow suit for bottled water. Regulators can either adopt these limits or provide justification for opting out.

In the meantime, consumers are advised to stay informed. Bottled water brands that publish water quality reports—including PFAS test results—offer more transparency. Some labels already display such data, and consumers can use these to make informed choices.

Reducing PFAS Exposure at Home

For those concerned about PFAS in drinking water, specific filtration systems offer a practical safeguard. Filters certified with the NSF P473 label are proven to remove PFAS from water. These filters are available as under-sink systems, whole-home units, or pitcher-style options.

Homeowners seeking long-term solutions may consider reverse osmosis systems. These systems push water through a semi-permeable membrane, trapping even tiny contaminants like PFAS. Whole-home water conditioners, when paired with these filters, help improve water safety throughout the house. Together, these tools can significantly reduce chemical exposure through drinking and cooking.
