The City of Durham’s Department of Water Management provides drinking water to over 300,000 residents in Durham and surrounding areas. The city sources its water from two primary reservoirs, Lake Michie and the Little River Reservoir, both located in northern Durham County. Water is treated at the Brown and Williams Water Treatment Plants, which have a combined capacity of 52 million gallons per day. Concerns about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have led to increased monitoring and public awareness. While Durham’s water meets regulatory standards, city officials are evaluating additional treatment options to further reduce contaminants. As demand grows, Durham continues investing in infrastructure improvements to maintain a safe and reliable water supply.
