The City of Raleigh’s water utility, Raleigh Water, provides drinking water to over 600,000 residents in Raleigh and surrounding communities, including Garner, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Knightdale, and Wendell. The utility sources water from Falls Lake Reservoir, a key regional resource created by the Neuse River dam. Raleigh Water operates two advanced treatment plants, the E.M. Johnson Water Treatment Plant and the D.E. Benton Water Treatment Plant, which together can treat up to 106 million gallons daily. Concerns over contaminants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have driven increased monitoring and discussions about future upgrades. While the utility’s water meets federal and state standards, efforts are underway to evaluate enhanced filtration systems to address these challenges and ensure long-term safety for residents.
