Hampton Water Quality Report

Hampton, VA Water Source & Treatment

An educational overview of where Hampton drinking water comes from, how it’s treated, and where to find the official annual water quality report.

Where Hampton Water Comes From

Hampton’s drinking water is supplied through Newport News Waterworks, a regional provider serving Hampton and neighboring communities on Virginia’s Lower Peninsula.

The primary source is surface water from the Diascund Creek Reservoir, supplemented by the Chickahominy River (as conditions require). Water is pumped from these sources and transferred to reservoirs for storage before being treated and delivered to customers.

How Hampton Water Is Treated

Hampton’s water is treated at Newport News Waterworks treatment facilities using multiple barriers to improve clarity and reduce contaminants. Treatment typically includes screening, coagulation/clarification, filtration, and disinfection.

The process may include the use of ozone for primary disinfection, followed by chloramines as a secondary disinfectant to maintain protection throughout the distribution system. Adjustments for stability and corrosion control can also be applied to help protect household plumbing.

Official Hampton Water Quality Report

Newport News Waterworks publishes an annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) that includes Hampton customers, summarizing source information, treatment, and regulated testing results.

Additional Water Information (EWG Database)

Some homeowners also explore third-party water databases such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Tap Water Database. This resource compiles publicly available testing data and presents it using its own health-based guidelines.

EWG is not a regulatory agency, and its screening levels may differ from EPA or state drinking water standards. For official compliance reporting, always refer to the annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) linked above.
