Newport News Water Quality Report

Newport News, VA Water Source & Treatment

An educational overview of where Newport News drinking water comes from, how it’s treated, and where to find the official annual water quality report.

Where Newport News Water Comes From

Newport News drinking water is supplied by Newport News Waterworks, a regional system serving customers across the Virginia Peninsula.

The primary source of drinking water is surface water from the Chickahominy River, which is stored in several reservoirs including Diascund Creek Reservoir before treatment and distribution to customers. The Waterworks system serves Newport News as well as Hampton, Poquoson, parts of York County, and parts of James City County.

How Newport News Water Is Treated

Water is treated at two main facilities operated by Newport News Waterworks: the Lee Hall Water Treatment Plant and the Harwood’s Mill Water Treatment Plant.

The treatment process typically includes screening, coagulation, clarification, filtration, and disinfection. Additional treatment such as pH adjustment, corrosion control, and chloramine disinfection helps maintain water quality throughout the distribution system before it reaches homes and businesses.

Official Newport News Water Quality Report

Newport News Waterworks publishes an annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) summarizing water sources, treatment processes, and regulated contaminant testing results.

Additional Water Information (EWG Database)

Some homeowners also explore third-party water databases such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Tap Water Database. This resource compiles publicly available testing data and presents it using its own health-based guidelines.

EWG is not a regulatory agency, and its screening levels may differ from EPA or state drinking water standards. For official compliance reporting, always refer to the City’s annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR).
