Norfolk, VA Water Source & Treatment
An educational overview of where Norfolk drinking water comes from, how it’s treated, and where to find the official annual water quality report.
Where Norfolk Water Comes From
Norfolk’s drinking water begins as raw (untreated) water drawn from a regional system of reservoirs, rivers, and deep wells. Source water is pumped from these supplies to one of the City’s treatment plants before being delivered to customers.
Protecting these water sources is closely tied to watershed management, since rainfall and runoff flowing across land can carry pollutants into lakes and reservoirs.
How Norfolk Water Is Treated
Norfolk treats drinking water at two municipal facilities: Moores Bridges Water Treatment Plant and the Kristen M. Lentz (37th Street) Water Treatment Plant.
After treatment (including filtration and disinfection), water is tested to meet state and federal drinking water standards, then pumped on demand through Norfolk’s distribution system to homes and businesses.
Official Norfolk Water Quality Report
The City of Norfolk publishes an annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) summarizing source information, treatment, and regulated testing results.

Additional Water Information (EWG Database)
Some homeowners also explore third-party water databases such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Tap Water Database. This resource compiles publicly available testing data and presents it using its own health-based guidelines.
EWG is not a regulatory agency, and its screening levels may differ from EPA or state drinking water standards. For official compliance reporting, always refer to the City’s annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR).
