Gloucester, VA Water Source & Treatment
An educational overview of where Gloucester drinking water comes from, how it’s treated, and where to find the official annual water quality report.
Where Gloucester Water Comes From
Gloucester’s drinking water comes from two sources operated by Gloucester County Public Utilities: Beaverdam Reservoir and a groundwater source treated through reverse osmosis.
Surface water from Beaverdam Reservoir and treated groundwater are blended and delivered through the county’s water system to homes and businesses in the Gloucester area.
How Gloucester Water Is Treated
Gloucester treats surface water at the county’s Surface Water Treatment Plant, a facility located adjacent to Beaverdam Reservoir.
Treatment includes chlorine disinfection, soda ash for pH control, and a corrosion inhibitor for distribution system protection. Groundwater treated by the county’s reverse osmosis plant is blended with surface water before distribution.
Official Gloucester Water Quality Report
Gloucester County publishes an annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) summarizing source information, treatment, and regulated testing results.

Additional Water Information (EWG Database)
Some homeowners also explore third-party water databases such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Tap Water Database. This resource compiles publicly available drinking water testing data.
EWG is not a regulatory agency, and its screening levels may differ from EPA or state drinking water standards. For official compliance reporting, always refer to the county’s annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR).
