Smithfield, VA Water Source & Treatment
An educational overview of where Smithfield drinking water comes from, how it’s treated, and where to find the official annual water quality report.
Where Smithfield Water Comes From
Smithfield’s drinking water comes from groundwater wells operated by the Town of Smithfield Water Department.
The town’s water supply is drawn from two deep wells in the Middle Potomac Aquifer before treatment and distribution to homes and businesses throughout Smithfield.
How Smithfield Water Is Treated
Smithfield treats its groundwater using a reverse osmosis plant that was placed online in 2011.
The treatment process uses reverse osmosis to reduce naturally occurring fluoride in the groundwater. The finished water is also treated with sodium hypochlorite for disinfection and hydrated lime for pH balance and corrosion control throughout the distribution system.
Official Smithfield Water Quality Report
The Town of Smithfield publishes an annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) summarizing source information, treatment, and regulated testing results.
