EPA & HHS To Use $1B Against PFAS In Drinking Water

CLIFF NOTES
  • EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced PFAS actions at a Monday roundtable in Washington.
  • The EPA proposed a comprehensive, lifecycle-based strategy for PFAS in drinking water.
  • Kennedy announced nearly $1 billion in new funding for states to address PFAS in drinking water.
  • Kennedy said the work spans contamination, exposure, treatment, monitoring, and long-term research.
  • The report describes the move as reversing 2024 legal protections from the Biden administration, with Zeldin citing Safe Drinking Water Act compliance concerns.

In Washington, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the federal government will intensify its push against PFAS in drinking water. At a Monday roundtable, the EPA outlined a “lifecycle-based” plan, and Kennedy announced nearly $1 billion in new state funding aimed at PFAS work.

What happened at the roundtable?

According to the report, Zeldin and Kennedy announced new efforts to combat per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) during a roundtable in Washington.

The EPA proposed moving forward with a comprehensive strategy that follows PFAS “at every stage,” from contamination and exposure to treatment, monitoring, and long-term research. The agency described PFAS as “forever chemicals,” a label commonly used for these compounds.

Kennedy said the administration will direct nearly $1 billion in new funding to states to address PFAS in drinking water.

What did officials say?

Kennedy framed the plan as a whole-chain response—from where PFAS begins to how it is studied over time.

“EPA and HHS are addressing PFAS at every stage contamination, exposure to treatment, monitoring and long-term research. Americans want honest science, accountability and policies that improve health outcomes and protect future generations,” RFK Jr. said.

Why does this matter?

PFAS in drinking water sits at the intersection of public health and public trust. The report describes the federal approach as a broad strategy—one that aims to track PFAS from source to human exposure and then to the tools used to reduce it.

The funding announcement matters because state agencies often carry the operational burden of drinking-water response efforts. Nearly $1 billion, as described in the report, is intended to strengthen what states can do on the ground.

How does this change earlier federal policy?

The report calls the announcement “a reversal of legal protections adopted in 2024 under the Biden administration.”

Zeldin said those 2024 protections did not comply with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act, according to the report. The new approach is presented as a shift in the legal and policy posture guiding PFAS work in drinking water.

How filtration and conditioning relate to PFAS in drinking water

Reverse osmosis (RO) filtration systems are often discussed in the context of PFAS because they are designed to reduce many dissolved contaminants at the point of use. Whole-home water conditioners focus on improving water quality throughout a house by addressing problems that affect plumbing and fixtures. In real-world terms, RO can target drinking and cooking water, while conditioning can improve everyday water use and help protect household systems.
